The National
Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was set up by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India as an autonomous organization in 1989 by
amalgamating Open School project of CBSE started in 1979. It was known as
National Open School till 2002.
NIOS provides
educational opportunities using distance and open learning methods to persons
who wish to study and qualify for a better tomorrow. The Mission of NIOS is to
provide education for all with special concern for girls and women, rural
youth, working people, SC/ST, physically and mentally challenged and other disadvantaged
groups.

The entry qualifications vary from literate to 12th
pass. There is no upper age limit for admission lover age limit is 14 years and
18 years for some courses
Duration of the courses are 6 months to 2 years
Choice of study centres: freedom to choose study
centre (AVI) nearest to your residence or work place, in which the course you
want to study is offered
Admission valid for 5 years
Examination every six months and credit
accumulation.

cost of Rs.50/- can be obtained from the Regional Centres of NIOS and any of
the AVIs/SAIED. Other details like course fee, eligibility, addresses of
Regional Centre and Statewise list of AVIs/SAIED along with full details of
