Ph.D Programme in Computer Science and Information
Technology session starting in July 2013
IDRBT, the premier
Institute of Banking Technology in the country, spearheads efforts in providing
state-of-the-art technologies for the Banking and Financial Sector. The
Institute interfaces Research and Development, Academics, Executive Training
and Best Practices.
Consequent upon the
recommendations of an Expert Committee headed by
Dr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Prime Minister’s
Economic Advisory Council, IDRBT
has initiated ambitious plans to scale up its research and academic activities.
The Institute has been
offering a Ph.D programme in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad (A Central University) since 1999. The University of
Hyderabad, a premier institution of teaching and research in the country, was
established by an Act of Parliament on 2nd October
1974 as a Central University. The NAAC has awarded “A” Grade with a Cumulative
Grade Point Average of 3.89 on 4.0 scale to the University. The University
Grants Commission has declared the University of Hyderabad a ‘University with
Potential for Excellence.’ The University has also been rated by the National
Information System for Science and Technology of the Department of Scientific
and Industrial Research, Government of India, as the only University under the
“High Output – High Impact” category among the top 50 Institutions in India with
publications in citation-index journals.
On February 05, 2011, IDRBT has been granted Associate
Institution Status by the University of Hyderabad for undertaking research
independently at IDRBT for the award of Ph.D.Degree in the areas of Computer Science
and Information Technology. Three batches of Ph.D. scholars under the aegis of
the Associate Institution category have joined the Institute in January 2012,
July 2012 and January 2013.
IDRBT now invites applications for its full-time Ph.D
Programme in Computer Science and Information Technology [with focus on Banking
Technology] for the session starting in July 2013. The eligibility criteria for
the Ph.D programme is as under:
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Masters Degree in any
Engineering / Technology; OR
M.Phil
in Mathematics or Statistics or Electronics; OR Bachelor’s
Degree in B.E. / B.Tech OR
Master’s
Degree in Computer Applications / Computer Science / Mathematics / Statistics /
Electronics / Information Systems / Internet Technology / Geo-Informatics /
Bio-Informatics with a minimum of 60% marks in any of the above stated
qualifying degrees (a relaxation of 5% marks
is provided to SC/ST candidates).
All educational
qualifications must have been obtained from recognized universities/ institutions in India or
abroad. If grades are awarded instead of marks, candidates should clearly
indicate their numerical equivalent.

Candidates should have a keen interest to carry out
research in one of the following areas of

NO. OF SEATS
The Institute can admit upto Eight (8) Ph.D Scholars in
a year and the reservation break-up, category-wise, is as follows:-

The Ph.D programme is offered only on a
regular full-time basis and accordingly only candidates who are interested to
pursue the programme on a regular full time basis at IDRBT, Hyderabad, need to
apply. This criterion shall also apply to the candidates from the Indian
Banking and Financial Sector.
RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
The selected Research
Scholars would be paid a monthly stipend of Rs. 18,000/- per month during the
first and second year and Rs. 20,000/- per month during the subsequent years.
The fellowship based upon
performance is normally tenable for four (4) years.
FACILITIES
The Institute would provide
accommodation to the selected Research Scholars in the Institute’s quarters at
Begumpet, Hyderabad, on nominal applicable charges. The Institute also provides
one laptop and funding of upto 1 lakh for attending international conferences
as per the rules of the Institute to the Research Fellows. The Institute
provides an excellent research ambience and has a well-stocked library.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
The Entrance Examination
for admission to the Ph.D. programme would consist of:
(i) A Written Examination of 75 marks for 2 hours
from 10 am to 12 noon on June 23, 2013 (Sunday) at the University of
Hyderabad campus at Gachibowli, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. The candidates must
reach the venue by 9.30 a.m. The candidates may note that the venue is around
25 kilometres from the main city of Hyderabad and they should make their travel
arrangements accordingly. Candidates arriving after 10 am will not be allowed
to take the Written Examination. The results of the Written Examination would
be announced on the IDRBT website by 9 pm on June 23, 2013 (same day).
(ii) Personal Interview (only for the candidates
qualifying the written examination) on June 24, 2013 (Monday) for
25 marks from 9:30 am onwards at IDRBT, Castle Hills, Road No.1, Masab Tank,
Hyderabad – 57, Andhra Pradesh.
The written examination and personal interview
would be conducted at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh only.
Accordingly, candidates
called for the selection process should make their own travel and Accommodation
arrangements in such a way that they can stay in Hyderabad for two days and the
Institute shall have no responsibility in this regard.

Candidates who qualify the Written Examination
and also attend the Personal Interview would be reimbursed 3rd AC return rail
fare by the shortest route on production of tickets.
It may be noted that all
those who apply may be issued Hall Tickets without verifying whether or not
they satisfy the eligibility criterion for admission. This will be examined at
the time of final admission, if granted. The candidates are therefore advised
to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria prescribed before submitting
their application form. Despite this caution, in case the candidates do not
meet the minimum eligibility criteria and still apply for the entrance
examination, they will do so at their own risk and cost. Mere issue of Hall
Ticket and allowing a candidate for entrance examination including interview
and allowing a candidate to complete the admission which is provisional will
not entitle a candidate for any claim on the provisional admission if s/he does
not fulfill the required eligibility conditions for admission as prescribed
herein. This will be verified at the time of admission, if granted. At any
stage, during the pursuance of the programme, if it is found that any candidate
does not fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements, the provisional
admission that was granted shall be cancelled forthwith.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FORMAT
The Question Paper for the
Written Examination will consist of 75 objective questions in two parts – Part
A and Part B. While Part A would contain 25 questions carrying 25 marks, Part B
will contain 50 questions carrying 50 marks. There will be negative marking of
0.33 mark each for every wrong answer in both the parts.
The written test covers the
areas of Technical Comprehension, Computer Organisation, Computer Programming,
Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, Database
Management Systems, Graph Theory, Computer Networks and Automata. Further,
candidates should have a keen interest to carry out research in one of the
areas of Banking Technology as mentioned in Para 2 above.
At the time of the interview, all candidates
must come prepared with a tentative research plan write-up of maximum size of 4
pages (six copies) and they are encouraged to submit details of research
papers/technical reports they have authored. The candidate should bring his/her
Project Report(s)/ Dissertation(s)/Thesis of the Qualifying/Master’s Degree to
show at the time of the interview.

will be rejected and no correspondence in this regard will be entertained by
the Institute. There is no application fee.
Candidates belonging to
SC/ST category should submit along with the application a scanned copy of the
certificate of their caste / tribe from a Revenue Officer not below the rank of
Tahsildar / Mandal Revenue Officer. Further, SC/ST candidates belonging to the
state of Andhra Pradesh should submit an Integrated Community Certificate
issued by the Competent Revenue Authority. Candidates claiming OBC reservation
must enclose an attested copy of the OBC (non-creamy layer) certificate issued
by a competent authority without which their claim will not be considered under
OBC category.
