Ph.D. Admission 2013-2014
Applications are invited for
admission to the Ph.D. (Full Time/Part Time/Off Campus) programme for July/Aug
2013 as per the details given in this brochure, alongwith fee in the form of
crossed Bank Draft for ` 500/-(Rupees Five Hundred only) drawn in favour of the
Registrar, NIT Hamirpur (HP)-177 005, payable at State Bank of India, NIT
Hamirpur (Branch Code No. 10367). Duly filled/completed application should
reach in the office of Dean (Academic), National Institute of Technology,
Hamirpur (HP)-177 005 by 02.08.2013 upto 5.00PM. The application form may
be downloaded from Institute website http://www.nith.ac.in/.
Application form found incomplete or
received after the last date i.e. 02.08.2013 (in the office of Dean
(Academic)), will be rejected without any intimation to the candidate and no
correspondence will be entertained in this regard. The candidates should note
that the Institute will not be responsible for postal delay or any
irregularities in submitting the applications.
In case, a candidate wants to
apply for programmes in more than one department/centre, he/she is required to
send separate applications for each programme alongwith processing fee of `
500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only). Latest update about schedule, etc. will be
available on Institute website http://www.nith.ac.in. For any additional

Important Note:
The number of seats available
in the Institute depends on the number ofavailable research guides in the
Institute and the vacancies available with the guides.
The minimum eligibility
criteria indicated in this brochure for Ph.D. programme is only enabling
clause. The department may fix higher criteria at the time of shortlisting,
keeping in view the number of candidates, minimum background expected to cope
with the programme, etc.
Hostel accommodation shall be
provided subject to availability.
All matters of dispute will be
subjected to legal jurisdiction of the courts at Hamirpur/Shimla.
The Institute reserves the
right to amend, without any notice, any provisions stated in this document/brochure.
In all matters, the
decision/interpretation of Senate/Chairman Senate shall be final.
Candidates claiming to belong
to OBC will be required to produce a certificate to that effect from
appropriate authority issued on or after 01.04.2013. Such candidates will have
to satisfy the caste and creamy layer requirements detailed on the following
National Commission for Backward Classes (ncbc) websites:

The Ph.D. programmes shall be

The number of seats available in
the Institute depends on the number of available research guides in the
Institute and the vacancies available with the guides. The admission of
candidates to Ph.D. programmes depends on the expertise available in a
department/centre and the willingness of the candidate to work in the
corresponding research areas.
The reservations will be as per
the reservation policy of the Government of India.
Eligibility for Admission
Ph.D. in Engineering/Architecture (including Centres)
The applicant must have a Master
Degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture in appropriate discipline with
CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of
Open/OBC candidates in qualifying degree. Whereas in case of SC/ST candidates a
CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in qualifying
degree will be applicable.
As per various notices circulated
by the AICTE all the qualifications acquired through distance mode at Bachelor
and Master level in the field of Engineering/Technology and Architecture are
not recognized. Such candidates with degree from distance mode may not be
considered eligible.
Ph.D. in Applied Sciences
The applicant must have a master
degree in relevant science subject with CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or
equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/OBC candidates in qualifying degree.
Whereas in case of SC/ST candidates a CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or
equivalent) or 55% marks in qualifying degree will be applicable.
Ph.D. in Humanities & Social Sciences
The applicant must have a master
degree in appropriate discipline with CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or
equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/OBC candidates in qualifying degree.
Whereas in case of SC/ST candidates a CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or
equivalent) or 55% marks in qualifying degree will be applicable.
Admission Procedure
(a) The applicants shall apply
for admission on the prescribed form which can be downloaded from Institute
website. The duly completed application must reach the office of Dean
(Academic) latest
by 02.08.2013 upto 5.00PM.
(b) The applications shall be
scrutinized by the Departmental Selection Committee (DSC) of different
departments/centres. The list of shortlisted candidates found eligible for
written test shall be displayed on Institute website by respective Head of
Department/Centreon 07.08.2013 and no separate call letter will be
issued.
The selection process for
admission to Ph.D. programme shall be in two stages:
Stage-I: All the shortlisted candidates found eligible are required
to qualify in a written examination in the relevant discipline conducted by the
Institute on 13.08.2013
at 9.00AM. The syllabi for the written test is available on the
Institute website. The written test shall be of 90 minutes duration for 60
marks consisting of multiple choice questions in the relevant discipline. Those
who qualify in the written test shall only be eligible for Stage-II. List of
such candidates will be displayed on the notice board of the concerned
department/centre on the same day (i.e. 13.08.2013).
The candidates who are having
valid JRF certificates from the funding agencies of Govt. of India such as
UGC/CSIR/DST etc. and are willing to join the Institute as full time Ph.D.
candidate are exempted from the written test and will directly qualify to
Stage-II.
Stage-II: The candidates who qualify to Stage-II shall appear for interview
and presentation on 14.08.2013 at 9.00AM before the duly constituted
Departmental Selection Committee (DSC). The presentation should be brief and
clear (around 5-10 minutes) highlighting the basic idea of proposed research.
The presentation must broadly include:
The topic/subject of the
proposed research work.
An outline containing
introduction to the subject, international/ national importance, broad
objectives, scope and methodology of research work with relevant literature
review.
(c) On approval by the Chairman,
Senate, the Head of the Department/Centre will issue the admission letters to
the selected candidates, who will be required to accept the offer of admission
by depositing the prescribed fee upto 19.08.2013 (5:00PM).
(d) In case, a candidate does not
pay the prescribed fee by the specified deadline, the offer of admission may
stand withdrawn and the admission may be offered to the candidates in the
waiting list, if any, in order of merit.
(e) The selected candidates will
have to register on or before 19.08.2013
(5:00PM) for the course work in
consultation with the Supervisor/Convener DPGC/SRC as the case may be. (f) The
selected candidate, who will complete all the examinations including
project/thesis examination and the viva voce before the date of admission (i.e.
13/14.08.2013) but is unable to produce the certificate as proof of
having passed and secured the minimum specified qualifying marks, may be
considered for provisional admission. However, if admitted provisionally, they
will be required to produce the evidence of their having passed the qualifying
degree examination by 15.09.2013, failing which the admission may be cancelled.
(g) The candidates are required
to produce the following documents in original as well as one copy thereof at
the time of admission on 13/14.08.2013.

sponsoring organization, if applicable
The selected candidates are also
required to produce additional documents as specified on the Institute website
[Admission Desk] by 19.08.2013.
Admission of Sponsored Candidates
i. A candidate who is sponsored
by his/her employer and also meets the additional conditions specified in sub
clause iii (below) may be admitted if qualifies the written test and
recommended by the DSC.
ii. All the sponsored candidates
must attach the relevant sponsorship certificate preferably on letterhead of
the institution/organization/industry along with the application. Moreover, the
sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large scale Government organization/private
industry or a reputed technical institute.
iii. A sponsored candidate must
have been in service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years on
01.07.2013. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to relieve
him/her to pursuethe programme for its full duration. Such candidates are
required to submit No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their
employer/organization stating that:
a) His/her official duties permit
him/her to devote sufficient time for Research.
b) Candidates willing to register
in part time mode will have to reside in the Institute for a period of not less
than one year during his/her registration for the degree to complete the course
work. However, this condition can be relaxed for candidates working at/around
Hamirpur (HP) within a road distance of about 50 KMs without any relaxation in
the course work requirements.
Admission to Off Campus Programme for Ph.D.
i. A candidate working in an
R&D establishment or in other institution/organization, which is equipped
with the necessary research and library facilities, may be considered for
admission to various Ph.D. programmes as per eligibility specified above. Such
a candidate must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment
with the sponsoring organization for at least two years on 01.07.2013.
Moreover, the sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large scale
Government organization/private industry or a reputed technical institute.
The employer must explicitly
undertake to relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to
complete the Course work, Comprehensive Examination and State of the Art
seminar as per the requirement of NIT Hamirpur.
Such a candidate may be admitted
if he/she qualifies the written test and is recommended by the DSC.
ii. A candidate applying for
admission to the off campus registration must provide detailed information
about the research facilities available at his/her organization and a
certificate that these would be available to him/her for carrying out research.
iii. The candidate has to clear
the course work requirements as specified above.
3. Approval of Admission
On the recommendation of the DSC,
the list of candidates recommended for admission will be sent for approval of
Chairman Senate through Chairman SPGC and Dean (Academic). After approval of
the Chairman Senate, concerned Head of the Department/Centre will issue the admission
letters to the selected candidates. All the students/research scholars once
admitted to Ph.D. programme, shall be governed by the Institute norms.
