Agricultural Research) Karnal-132001 (Haryana) INDIA
About Institute
& Animal Biotechnology Centre
National
Dairy Research Institute (Deemed University) is the premier organization that
provides Research and Development support for dairy development programmes of
the Nation. Over the years, it has gained prominence as the front ranking
research organization on global basis. Animal Biotechnology Centre (ABTC) is one
of the prestigious centre of the Institute. Activities on biotechnology
research at NDRI were initiated during mid eighties under a UNDP 'Centre of
Excellence Programme on Biotechnology’. In 1987, on recommendation of the National
Task Force of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, a National
Project on Embryo Transfer Technology was initiated at NDRI which was also supported
by ICAR/ USAID bilateral co-operation in its initial stages. At NDRI, more than
10 calves from a single cow in one calendar year have been produced using Embryo
Transfer Technology. The in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique was
successfully used to produce the world’s first IVF calf in buffalo. The IVF
technique has also been used to produce the goat kids for the first time in
India.
At
present the centre has developed impressive facilities for research and
teaching in the areas of high end embryo biotechniques like animal tissue
culture, in vitroembryo production, somatic cell cloning and embryonic stem
cell production, transgenic animal production, genome analysis, expression
genomics and proteomics etc. World’s first clone buffalo calf was produced on
Feb 6, 2009 by hand guided cloning technique using somatic cells as donor cell.
Cloned calf Garima-II was produced on 22nd September 2010, using embryonic stem
cell as donor cell. Recently Garima-II has delivered a normal female calf
“MAHIMA” on January 25, 2013.
Stem cells
Stem
cells are a special kind of cells which are capable of undergoing unlimited
number of symmetrical mitotic cell divisions without differentiation;
maintaining stable diploid karyotype; are clonogenic, which have the same
properties as the original cell; are capable of either entering a path leading
to a fully differentiated cell or remaining as stem cells. Embryonic Stem cell technology
is expected to have immense importance for the production of cloned, transgenic
farm animals, enable studies on gene targeting, fundamental events in embryonic
developmental, germ cell production and production of therapeutic delivery
systems. The research on stem cells is a new area and has enormous potential in
animal sector for quality animal production. The present training aims at
imparting hands on training on stem cell techniques.
Course contents
(theory and on bench practical)
• Introduction to embryonic stem (ES)
cell.
• Production of IVF embryos.
• Isolation of embryonic stem cells
from the IVF blastocysts.
• Feeder layer cell culture from the
animal skin, fetus etc.
• Different types of media for stem
cell culture.
• Culture of stem cells on feeder
layer and on feeder free systems.
• Characterization of ES cells by
surface and intracellular markers.
• Production of embryoid bodies.
• Differentiation of stem cells:
spontaneous and directed differentiation.
• Use of stem cells for cloning,
transgenic and quality animal production.
Applications
Applications
are invited from researchers and teachers of Animal Biotechnology and allied
subjects not below the rank of Scientist of ICAR/Assistant Professor of SAUs
and CAUs and other Universities. Preference will be given to the institutes/
Universities located in North East region of country. The application must
reach to the Course Director before October 15, 2013. Intending participants, who
anticipate delay in sending their applications through proper channel, may send
an advance copy of their applications. However, it will be their responsibility
to bring duly forwarded applications or a no-objection certificate at the time
of joining the course. Format of application may be copied from brochure.
Trainee should have at least five years of service left before superannuation.
The application may also be sent through email to the course Director (chauhanabtc@gmail.com)
Certificate
A
certificate will be awarded to the participant on the successful completion of
the course.
Financial
assistance
No
course fee will be charged for joining the course.
The
participants will be paid T.A. for to and fro journey by rail/ bus/public
transport by the shortest route as per entitlement, but restricted to A.C. II
train fare (on producing documentary evidence). They should produce a
certificate from the parent organization to the effect that they are not being
paid T.A. and D.A. for this course.
Boarding and
Lodging
Accommodation
will be arranged free of cost in the institute Scientist Home for the period of
their stay during the course. Wholesome food will be provided free of cost to
all the outside participants. Local participants will be provided with minimum
hospitality of lunch, tea, coffee etc. as per ICAR rules. (Please do not bring
your family members with you. It will not possible to arrange for their
