Applicants can choose to be considered for provisional enrolment for PhD in Economics, either after the MPhil coursework or the full Programme, if meeting the requirements. The Programme has two-semester course-work and a dissertation.
Applicant should have a Master's Degree in Economics with at least 50% marks or in other Social Sciences, Humanities or Law with at least 55% marks or in Sciences, Technology or Life Sciences with at least 60% marks. SC/ST applicants and PH applicants with more than 40% disability are eligible irrespective of their percentage of marks.
The Programme follows an inter-disciplinary approach and those from non-Economics background are encouraged to apply. Those awaiting results of the Master's Programme can also apply, subject to the completion of the requirements of such Degree at the time of commencement of the Programme.
The Programme will have an annual intake of about 15 candidates. Two seats are available for officers deputed by the Government of Kerala. Journalists and Postgraduates in Journalism can utilize a fellowship of the Journalism Education Trust to undergo either the coursework or the full programme. Reservation is 15% for SC; 7.5% for ST and 3% for Physically Challenged candidates.
Application Form and Prospectus can be downloaded from http://www.cds.edu. A DD for Rs. 200/- drawn on any Nationalized Bank in favour of the Centre for Development Studies, payable at Trivandrum, should be enclosed with the completed application.

SC/ST candidates and PH candidates with more than 40% disability are exempted from payment of the application fee.
Completed Application along with the research proposal and self attested copies of Mark Sheets/Grade Cards/ Degree Certificates should reach the Programme Office on or before 28th May, 2009.
Applicants are first shortlisted for interview on the basis of their score for academic record (based on percentage of marks obtained in +2, Bachelor's and Master's Programmes) and score for Research proposal (average of three evaluations by CDS faculty), submitted with the application. The Research Proposal is the tool for evaluation of the applicant's interest and aptitude for undergoing this Programme and is a key element of the application.
The Proposal can be in any field of study, but with an Applied Economics approach; should ideally be within 1500 words, neatly typed/ word-processed.
It should be the candidate's own work. The research Proposal should contain, A review of relevant literature on the chosen topic, A cogent exposition on the study problem, objectives of the study, Theoretical Framework, Methodology and sources of data, List of References.
Candidates shortlisted for interview to be held between 6th July and 8th July 2009, will be paid return sleeper class rail fare to Trivandrum from the nearest railway station to the place given in the communication address in the application, if more than 50 km away from Trivandrum. Final selection will be announced on July 08, 2009.
