The program funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India is administered by IISc, Bangalore.
KVPY aims to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research and strives to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth in the country.
Generous scholarship and contingency grant is provided up to the Pre-Ph.D. level to the selected students. In addition, summer programs for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
The Fellowships in the range of Rs. 4000/- to Rs. 7000/- p.m and contingency grants to the tune of 4 months fellowship p.a is offered to students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and are only for Indian Nationals studying in India.
Eligibility:
Basic Sciences: There are four categories under Basic Sciences.
Stream SA: Applicant should be enrolled in Class XI (Science Subjects) during 2009-10 and should have secured minimum 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in Class X Board Examination.
Stream SB+2: Applicant should be enrolled in Class 12 (+2) during 2009-10 and aspiring to join Under Graduate programme in Basic Sciences (B.Sc / Integrated M.Sc) for the session 2010-11 and should have secured minimum 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in Class X Board Examination.
Stream SB: Students enrolled in 1st year B. Sc / Integrated M.Sc. during 2009-10 and have secured minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects in Class XII Board Examination are eligible.
Stream SP (Basic Sciences): Students enrolled in Class XI/XII, I/II year (B.Sc./Integrated M.Sc.) in Basic Sciences during 2009-10 and have secured minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Class X & XII Board Examinations are eligible to apply under this stream. Monthly Fellowship and Annual Contingency will be Rs. 4000/- and Rs. 16000 respectively for SA and SP (After Xth Class). It will be Rs. 5000/- and Rs. 20000/- during B.Sc. and 1st to 3rd years of Integrated M.Sc and Rs. 7000/- and Rs. 28000/- during M.Sc. and 4th and 5th years of Integrated M.Sc for SB and SP streams.
SP (Engineering): Students joining I/II year B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch during 2009-10 and have secured minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Class X and XII Board Examinations are eligible. Students joining II year B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch must have passed first year exam of B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch with minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST). A hard copy of the Science/Engineering based research project is required along with the application.

SP (Medicine): Students joining I/II Professional year of M.B.B.S. programme during 2009-10 can apply. Students must have passed Class XII Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Science subjects or passed First Professional MBBS exam with not less than 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks. SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Basic Sciences (SA and SB): Eligible applicants from Streams SA and SB will be called for a written aptitude test (multiple choice) to be conducted at different centers across the country on 1st November 2009 (Sunday). The details of the venue of the aptitude tests will be put on the KVPY website in October 2009. Final stage of selection will be the interview based on performance in the aptitude test.
SP (Basic Sciences); SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine): Applicants short listed based on the project submitted will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted either at IISc, Bangalore or IIT-Bombay, Mumbai or ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December 2009 or January 2010.

Application forms can be obtained in person from IISc Bangalore till 10th September, 2009.
Those who are unable to use downloaded application may send a request for application form to 'The Convener, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, (KVPY), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012' along with the 'Pay in slip' of the processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) remitted to any core banking branche of State Bank of India, payable at all branches in India, to be paid into the credit of Administrative Executive, KVPY A/c. No. 10270577392, to reach the addressee latest by 1st September 2009, indicating the stream (SA, SB, SP etc.), on the envelope. SC/ST-candidates should provide a copy of the caste certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed proforma.
The completed application form along with (i) Caste certificate in the case of SC/ST candidates (ii) Project report in the case of SP/Basic Sciences/ Engineering/ Medicine (iii) copy of the marks statement of the qualifying examination(s), in the case of SP (Engineering), SP(Medicine) and (iv) the original copy of the challan of processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) should reach 'The Convener, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, (KVPY), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012 on or before 11.9.09 (Friday).
