The programme is constituted of three stages. A candidate is initially admitted for the one year (2 Semesters) Pre-sea course, which is designed to impart basic knowledge on the type of merchant ships, ship operations, types of goods carried by ships, shipping trade and a good foundation in the basic principles of navigation and environmental sciences. On completion, candidate will be awarded Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). This Diploma programme is followed by one and half year (3 Semesters) on-board ship training.
On successful completion of the same; a candidate is awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS). The Sixth Semester constitutes 'Second Mate Certificate of Competency' awarded by the Director General of Shipping and simultaneous award of B.Sc. (Nautical Science) Degree from the University.
Eligibility for admission is a Pass in 10 + 2 examination from a recognized Board/University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with not less than 55% marks in PCM aggregate OR With Physics as an individual subject in any one of the years of B.Sc., with not less than 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc., from a recognized University provided that the candidate must have passed 10 + 2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized Board OR B.E./B.Tech or its equivalent degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE/UGC/DEC.
Applicant should also have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/University.
Those appearing in eligibility educational qualification examination are also eligible to apply provided they meet all the eligibility criteria and produce the certificates to that effect. Those with three year Diploma from a recognized Polytechnic can also apply subject to the condition that their PCM aggregate in the Diploma programme shall not be less than 55%. Applicant should not be more than 25 years. The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
Applicant should be medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time Eye-sight should be 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should have Normal colour vision. Candidates will have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected for the programme.
Admission to this programme is offered on the basis of qualifying in a written test. The Entrance Test is conducted twice a year. Candidates seeking admission can fall in two categories namely Sponsored and Non-Sponsored. Candidates can be sponsored for admission by employing shipping companies/their authorized manning agents registered with the DGS and hence fall under category of Sponsored candidates. The Non-Sponsored candidates are those candidates who do not get sponsorship for their admission in the programme but they later seek sponsorship for their on-board training after obtaining admission in the programme.
All candidates (sponsored or non-sponsored) have clear the entrance test to become eligible for admission. Non-sponsored candidates shall be required to attend Counselling session after clearing the written Examination.
The Entrance Test will be conducted at IMU. The Examination shall have 180 objective type multiple choice questions distributed in six parts which are to be attempted in 3 hours. A candidate will be assessed with 30 questions each form English, General Knowledge, Reasoning Aptitude, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The standard of the Entrance Test will generally be that of 10+2 level.
The Student Handbook and Prospectus can be obtained from IMU Chennai on payment of Rs.100/- in cash or obtained by POST from 'Head-Nautical Science Department, Indian Maritime University, East Coast Road, Uthandi, Chennai 600 119', by sending Demand Draft for Rs.200/- drawn in favour of IMU and payable at Chennai. It can also be downloaded from http://www.imu.tn.nic.in.
The registration fee for the programme is Rs.500/- (Rs.600/- in case of downloaded form which is inclusive of price of Students handbook and Prospectus) is to be paid along with application form for Entrance Test in Form-A.
Application form for admission is to be filled-in after qualifying in the Entrance Test. Completed form with copies of certificates/ testimonials along with requisite fee by way of Demand Draft in favour of the Indian Maritime University, payable at Chennai to be submitted during Counselling.
The course fee is Rs.2.20 lakhs. The fees are to be paid in the form of a DD drawn in favour of IMU payable at Chennai. SC/ST candidates from Tamilnadu State can avail the entire fee paid by TAHDCO, Tamilnadu. Girl students are eligible for discount / scholarship.
The admission for this programme is offered twice a year, i.e. in January/February and July/August. The Last date of submission of Applications for the next session commencing on 15th July 2009 is 29th May 2009. The Entrance Test will be held on 14th June 2009 (Sunday) from 10 am 1 pm. Counselling will be held from 24th to 29th June 2009 in all four Campus of IMU.

Applications have also been invited for the 4 year B.E. Marine Engineering Course. This course, strictly residential, leads to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after 6 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world.
Applicant must be Unmarried (male/female) Indian Citizens, with a pass in 10 + 2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard and should be 17 to 25 years as on 3rd August 2009, relaxable for SC/ST as per government guidelines. Candidates should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with eyesight up to +/- 2.5, and with no colour blindness. Seat Reservation will be as per Government of India directives.
