Applicants must have a minimum qualification of M.Sc. degree in Physics or B.E./B.Tech. degree in any one of Electronics, E&CE, Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering subjects with strong motivation and proficiency in Physics. The applicants must also have secured a minimum of 55% of marks in the respective qualifying examinations. Fresh students who are appearing for these examinations by July 2011 may also apply, provided their current GPA is above 55% or equivalent.
The selected candidates will be enrolled as Ph.D. students of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a Deemed to be University, with constituent institutions that include BARC, HRI, IGCAR, IMSc, SINP and VECC. Successful candidates after the course work will be attached to Ph.D. guides at various collaborating institutions for a PhD degree on the basis of their INO related work.
During the training period, students will be paid Rs. 16,000/- per month (Rs.18,000/- after registering for Ph. D.). Successful candidates after the training programme will continue to receive the scholarship during their Ph. D. studies. A research scholar is eligible for a contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year.
The admissions procedure consists of a written test at one of the 23 nationwide centres, as listed below, conducted by TIFR:

Students desirous of joining the INO Graduate Training programme have to appear for TIFR's Graduate School Admissions written test which will be conducted on Sunday, 12the December 2010.

Application Fee (Non-Refundable) for appearing to the test is: Rs 500/- for online applications and Rs 550/- for manual applications. Female candidates are exempted from payment of application fee. Rs 800/- for students taking the test as walk-in candidates.
Application fee has to be remitted in the mode of Demand Draft as follows:
Biology: DD should be drawn on State Bank of India in favour of "National Centre for Biological Science" payable at Bangalore.
Other Subjects: DD should be drawn on State Bank of India in favour of "Tata Institute of Fundamental Research" payable at Mumbai.
