Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai, a Deemed University and an advanced research institute established by Reserve Bank of India, has invited applications for admission to the following Post Graduate and Research Programmes for 2011-12.

M.Sc. Economics: For admission to the two-year programme commencing in August 2011, applicant should hold B.A/B.Sc in Economics/B.Com/B.Stat/B.Sc (Physics or Mathematics)/B.Tech/B.E with at least a second division for Economics discipline and first division for other disciplines and must have studied Mathematics at the Higher Secondary level or should be able to demonstrate equivalent Mathematical ability.

Scholarship: Some need-based scholarships are available to Masters Students as per Institute's norms. The second year Masters students are eligible to express interest to work as Graduate Assistants and depending upon the availability and norms, might be awarded such assistantships.

M.Phil/Ph.D (Development Studies): For the two years M.Phil Programme and 4 year Ph.D Programme both of which are interdisciplinary programmes commencing August 2011, applicant should hold M.A/M.Sc in Economics/ M.Stat/M.Sc (Physics or Mathematics or Environmental Science or Operations Research)/M.B.A/M.Tech/M.E/ B.Tech/B.E with at least 55% aggregate marks for Economics discipline and 60% aggregate marks for other disciplines. The applicant must have studied Mathematics at the Higher Secondary level or should be able to demonstrate equivalent Mathematical ability.

Stipend: M.Phil/Ph.D students will receive a monthly stipend of Rs.12,000/- in the first two years. Those students, who fulfill the terms and conditions for Ph.D. registration, would receive a monthly stipend of Rs.18,000/- after Ph. D. registration in the third year.

Selection Procedure: Selection will be based on a written test and an interview. The written test will cover General Aptitude, Analytical ability and Mathematical skills. The written test will be held on April 24, 2011 (Sunday) at Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, and Thiruvananthapuram. The test venue will be notified in the call letter. Based on the performance in the written test, short listed candidates will be called for an interview at IGIDR around the last week of June 2011. Second class return rail fare by the shortest route from the place of residence will be paid to the candidates interviewed.

Application: Application can be submitted online at http://www.igidr.ac.in/admission.php. This mode of application is strongly suggested. There is no application fee for the candidates applying online. The last date for receiving the Online completed application form is March 21, 2011.

Application forms and Prospectus may also be purchased from the Students' Office of the Institute on payment of Rs. 200/- by cash from 9.15 a.m to 5.45 p.m on working days (Monday to Friday). It can also be obtained by Post from the 'Students Office, IGIDR, Gen. A.K. Vaidya Marg, Santosh Nagar, Goregaon (East), Mumbai 400 065' (E-mail: soffice@igidr.ac.in), by sending a request on plain paper, indicating the candidate's name, date of birth, sex, address, academic qualifications, choice of test centre etc., and a Bank Draft of Rs. 200/- drawn in favour of 'Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR)', payable at Mumbai, to reach the addressee latest by March 18, 2011. Application form can also be downloaded from www.igidr.ac.in.

The Last date for receipt of completed application forms at IGIDR is March 21, 2011.

Reservation: Seats are reserved for SC/ST/Physically disabled categories as per the Government of India rules. Such applicants need not submit any application fee but are required to enclose a copy of the Caste Certificate/Medical Certificate (as the case may be) along with their request for application form. Those SC/ST/Physically disabled applicants submitting forms downloaded from the website are required to attach a copy of the necessary Certificate.

External Ph.D. Programme (Development Studies): Applications have also been invited for the interdisciplinary External Ph.D. Programme in Development Studies with emphasis on all areas of Economics including Energy and Environment Policy, commencing August 2011. Applicants with a minimum of three years of work experience from research and academic institutions, industry and government can apply. The External Ph.D. programme involves course work. There will be no scholarships or tuition fee waivers.

Applicant should hold M.A/M.Sc in Economics/M.Stat/M.Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Environmental Science or Operations Research/ M.B.A/M.Tech/M.E/ B.Tech/B.E or equivalent with at least 55% aggregate marks for Economics discipline and 60% aggregate marks for other disciplines. The applicant must have studied Mathematics at the Higher Secondary level or should be able to demonstrate equivalent Mathematical ability. Applicant should apply with the `No Objection Certificate' along with leave authorization on the official letterhead of the Organization duly signed by the authorized official of the Organization. Applicants should be preferably below 45 years of age which will be relaxed only in case of exceptional candidates.

Application can be submitted online at http://www.igidr.ac.in/admission.php.  There is no application fee for the candidates applying online. It is strongly suggested that the applicants should use the online facility for applying.

Application can also submitted to 'Students Office, IGIDR, Gen. A.K. Vaidya Marg, Santosh Nagar, Goregaon (East), Mumbai 400 065' (E-mail: soffice@igidr.ac.in), with (a) current curriculum vita of the applicant (b) two passport size photographs (c) two reference letters (in sealed envelopes and on official letterheads of the issuing authority) (d) No Objection Certificate along with leave authorization on the official letterhead of the Organization duly signed by the authorized official of the Organization (e) a self certified original research proposal not exceeding 3000 words (f) Research Publications (if any) and (g) a Bank draft of Rs. 200/- drawn in favour of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) payable at Mumbai. Envelope containing the Application should be marked 'Application for External Ph.D. Program'.

Selection: Based on the application, applicants will be short listed to be called for interview around the last week of June 2011. Three-tier AC class return rail fare by the shortest route from the place of residence will be paid to the candidates interviewed.
