FOR DISTINGUISHED SOCIAL SCIENTISTS

The Amartya Sen Awards for Distinguished Social Scientists have been instituted under the aegis of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the apex national organization for promoting social science research in India. These prestigious awards are an opportunity to honour the outstanding contributions made by social science scholars towards promoting scientific knowledge in the domain of social sciences. These are envisaged to be distinguished awards for social science research in India, similar to the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards in Sciences given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

The award comprises a citation, and a cash award of Rs. 10 lakh. Each year up to ten awards will be given to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to social science research.

Eligibility:
Any citizen of India/Overseas citizen of India (OCI)/Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), below the age of 55 years, as on 31 December of the year of the award, engaged in research and who has made contribution to any field of social sciences, will be eligible for consideration for this award.

The award will be bestowed upon a person who, in the opinion of ICSSR, has made an outstanding contribution towards the advancement of knowledge in any field of social sciences – theoretical and/or applied.

For the purpose of this award, outstanding contribution means that the scholar has added net value to the existing body of knowledge--theoretical and/or empirical--in the domain of social science research.

1. Economics
2. Commerce / Management
3. Sociology / Social Work / Social Anthropology
4. Political Science /International Studies / Public Administration
5. Geography / Demography
6. Psychology / Education
7. Legal Studies/ Human rights
8. Gender / Marginalized Groups
9. History / Archaeology
10. Philosophy / Cultural Studies
