B.Tech/B.Sc/Diploma Programmes Admissions 2011-2012

IMU Common Entrance Test (CET)on 19th June, 2011 (Sunday)

Indian Maritime University, Chennai has invited applications for admission to the B.Sc Ship Building and Repair, B.Tech Marine Engineering and Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science for the August 2011 session. Selection to the Programmes will be based on the IMU Common Entrance Test (CET) to be held across the country on 19th June, 2011 (Sunday).

The CET for admission to Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science will be held from 10 am to 1 pm on 19.6.2011 and that for admission to B.Sc Ship Building and Repair/B.Tech Marine Engineering from 2 pm to 5 pm on 19.6.2011 as per the Information Brochure available at http://imu.tn.nic.in

The Common Entrance Examination will be held at Chennai(Code 01), Madurai (02), Cochin (03), Trivandrum (04), Bengaluru (05), Hyderabad (06), Vishakapatnam (07), Port Blair (08), New Delhi (09), Guwahati (10), Patna (11), Mumbai (12), Raipur (13), Bilaspur (14), Kandla (15), Jaipur (16), Pune (17), Chandigarh (18), Lucknow (19), Ranchi (20), Kolkata (21) and Dehradun (22).

The CET for Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science will have 180 objective type multiple choice questions of 10+2 level with 30 questions each from Chemistry, English, General Knowledge, Mathematics, Physics and Reasoning Aptitude. Each question will carry one mark.

The CET for B.Sc Ship Building and Repair/B.Tech Marine Engineering will have 150 objective type multiple choice questions of 10+2 level with 20 questions from Chemistry; 25 from English, 40 from Mathematics, 40 from Physics and 25 from Reasoning Aptitude. Each question will carry one mark.

Validity of CET Score is applicable only for Academic Session starting August 2011.

Eligibility for different courses:

B.Tech Marine Engineering: The four year B.Tech Marine Engineering course, a strictly residential one, leads to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after 6 months of sea service. Applicant should be Unmarried male/female Indian Citizens, 17 to 25 years of age as on August 2011, with permissible relaxations for SC/ST applicants.

Applicant should have a pass in 10+ 2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics group, and at least 50% in English at the 10th or 12th standard. Those appearing for qualifying examination are also eligible to apply subject to the conditions specified in the Prospectus.

Applicant should be medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time. The details of the requirements on Eye Sight are available in the Prospectus.

Reservation of seats will be as per Government of India directives. Selection process involves 2 stages. In the first stage, applicants will have to apply to the Indian Maritime University and in the second stage, attend the CET by Indian Maritime University.

The course fee is Rs.2.25 lakhs per annum, to be paid in the form of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of IMU payable at Chennai.

B.Sc. Ship Building & Repair: The programme of three years/six semesters duration is designed to educate and train the students in ship building technology with a view to perform shop floor work at ship building or ship repair industries. A student is expected to complete the programme in 3 years period and those who could not do so can complete in within 5 years (not more than 10 semesters).

The programme will be conducted jointly by IMU Cochin campus and College of Ship Technology, Poonjamthodi, Kannanora Pattola, Puthucode, Palakkad district, Kerala having the requisite facilities of workshop and a tie up with TEBMA Ship yeard Ltd. for apprenticeship of students.

Applicant should be Unmarried male/female Indian Citizens, 17 to 25 years of age as on August 2011, with permissible relaxations for SC/ST applicants. All qualified candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in a prescribed format that will be made available to them at an appropriate time.The Course Fee is Rs.2,00,000/- per year.

B. Sc. Nautical Science: This is a six-semester (three year) programme constituting three stages. Initially, candidate is admitted for the one year (2 Semesters) Pre-sea course and on completion of I & II Semesters, the candidate will be awarded Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). This diploma programme is followed by one and half year (3 Semesters) on-board ship training and after successful completion of the same; the candidate is awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS). After completion of the on-board training, the Sixth Semester constitutes ‘Second Mate Certificate of Competency’, awarded by the Director General of Shipping and simultaneous award of B.Sc., (Nautical Science) degree from the University.

Those seeking admission can fall in one of the two categories- Sponsored or Non- Sponsored. A candidate, sponsored for admission by employing Shipping Company/their authorized manning agents registered with the DGS, fall under Sponsored category. The Non-Sponsored candidates are those candidates who do not get sponsorship for admission to the programme, but later seek sponsorship for their on-board training after obtaining admission in the programme. All candidates (sponsored or non-sponsored) are required to clear the IMU-Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) to become eligible for admission in the programme. The sponsoring companies are free to select IMU-CET qualified candidates, of their choice, to suit their company’s requirements and need not go by ranking in IMU-CET in picking up the IMU-CET qualified student of their choice. All the sponsored candidates shall report to IMU for certificate verification session which will be held separately. The date and time of the same will be intimated later. A non-refundable Certificate Verification fee of Rs.10,000/ - will be charged from the sponsored candidates.

Applicant should be unmarried male/female Indian citizens and should have a pass in 10+2 examination from a recognized Board / University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with not less than 55% aggregate marks in PCM or should hold B.Sc Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, from a recognized University, with an average of not less than 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc., provided that the candidate has passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized Board or should hold B.E./B. Tech. or it’s equivalent Degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE/UGC.

Applicant should also have passed in English as a separate subject, with not less than 50% marks, either in the 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/ University.

Applicant should not be more than 25 years and less than 17 years as on the commencement of course. The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. Applicant should be medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time. Eye-sight should be 6/6 in each eye without visual aids. Applicant should have Normal colour vision. Candidates will have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected for the programme. The course fee is Rs.2.20 lakhs.

There are two distinct forms in this Prospectus for the IMU- CET. The candidate has to submit Application Form ‘A’ for appearing for the IMU-Common Entrance Test. From ‘B’ relates to Admission for Councelling.

Completed Application Form for Common Entrance Test should reach ‘Controller of Examinations; Indian Maritime University; East Coast Road; Uthandi; Chennai-600119’, in an envelope super-scribed ‘Application form for B.Tech Marine Engineering / B.Sc Ship Building & Repair’/’Application form for Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Science)’, along with proof of payment or Payment Challan or Demand Draft for Rs.800/- (Rs.450/- for SC/ST candidates) with name, address and Phone No. written on the reverse of the D.D and a self-addressed envelope of size 10" x 4-1/2", with stamps worth Rs.5/- affixed on it, latest by 27th May 2011.

Candidates may retain a photocopy of the filled-in application form. Admit Card for the Common Entrance Test will be sent to the candidates based on the information furnished by the candidates in the Application Form. In case the candidate does not receive the same, he/she should check for it on the website of IMU and take a printout of the same and paste his/her photograph over it and get it attested from a Gazetted Officer. The candidate will be required to put his/her signature in the presence of Invigilator at the time of Common Entrance Test, on this print out. Thereafter the Invigilator will also put his/her signature on this copy. In case Admit card of candidate is not found on the website also, the candidate should contact the IMU along with the photocopy of the Application Form submitted by him/her for the issuance of a Duplicate Admit Card.

Candidate should retain the Admit card (duly countersigned by the Invigilator) after the Common Entrance Test and the same will be required to be produced at the time of Counseling. He/She may also be required to produce his/her Admit Card at the time of Interviews conducted by shipping companies/their manning agents. Finally, this Admit Card is to be enclosed along with the Proforma for Admission. The candidate has to produce his/her original testimonials at the time of Counseling at IMU for purposes of verification.
