Who is an Optometrist? 
Optometrists are primary eye care and health professionals concerned with vision care. They are experts in determining one's refractive error and prescribing appropriate correction. Optometrists are trained professionals involved in the treatment of visual defects with the help of optical instruments.

They deal with vision screening (eye testing), diagnosis of visual problems, orthoptics and vision training, optometric counseling of patients with partial sight, colour blindness and hereditary vision defects, and designing and fitting of spectacles, contact lens and low vision aids. They also prescribe vision therapy eye exercises to patients complaining of visual symptoms such as squint etc.

Today, problem of vision is common among people of all ages in India. Advancement in scientific technology and diagnostic methods has made the profession of Optometry one of the best career options. He/She can work with Optician shops, eye doctors, and Contact Lens and Ophthalmic lens industry, hospital eye departments, etc.
He/She can get jobs with Optician shops and hospitals in India and abroad.
He/She can take up teaching Optometry as a career with schools of Optometry.
The present scope of optometry practice is far more than the historic determination of the refractive state of the eyes and the prescribing and dispensing of glasses.
Today the practice of Optometry also includes the detection of ocular and related systemic diseases, the fitting of Contact Lenses and Low Vision Aids. It extends to public health-vision screening in school and industry - vision problems associated with driving and flying. It involves Optometric counseling of patients with partial sight and hereditary vision defects.
Eligibility criteria for Optometry 
An aspirant of optometry can pursue Diploma or BSc course in Optometry at the initial level. For these programs one must have passed 10+2 Science with English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with 50% marks in aggregate.

How to Apply?
a.     Detailed Prospectus & Application forms will be available from June every Year at the office, Eye Microsurgery and Laser Centre, International Tourist Complex, Pushpagiri Hospital Road, Tiruvalla – 689101, by payment of Rs. 400/- in cash or Rs. 450/-by post. The filled up application for the course along with necessary enclosures shall be forwarded to the office.

b. The application should be hand written and duly filled in block letters by the applicant.

Listed document should be attached with the application.
Attested copy of SSLC mark list.
Attested copy of Plus Two or equivalent mark list.
Attested copy of Birth Certificate.
Character Certificate from the previous institution.
4 Passport size colour photos.
A self addressed envelope with Rs. 5/- stamp affixed.
Original Certificates should be produced only by the time of Interview.

The application form duly filled up and signed, together with the enclosures should be   forwarded to The Director. The applications should reach the office on or before 15th August every year. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.





A qualified Ophthalmic technician can be absorbed into the Government or Private Hospitals, Eye Hospitals, Optical shops, Multi nationals associated with ophthalmic products or they can even setup their own optical shop.

DOT (Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology) Course

DIPLOMA IN OPTHALMIC TECHNICIAN UNDER C.M.A.I.

Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) is the official health agency for Chirstian Health Institutes and Health Proffessionals committed to the Ministry of Health. CMAI hasfellowship, advisory, assistance, consultancy as well as educational training programmes for institues, doctors, nurses, allied health professinals and administrators. The course approved by the Christian Medical Association of India are coordinated by the Central Education Board (CEB), Plot No.2, A-3, Local Shopping Centre, Janakpuri, New Delhi, 110058. Eye Microsurgery and Laser Centre, Thiruvalla is conducting Diploma in Opthalmic Technician approved by the CMAI:

ADMISSION

Eligibility:-
a. A pass in Plus Two examination or its equivalent with an aggregate of 50% marks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
b. The candidate should have completed 17 years and should not be more than 30 years as on 1st June 2007. The candidate should have basic working knowledge in English and should have good physique to carry out the hospital duties.
