Admissions Marine Engineering 2012

The course on Marine Engineering offered by CSSM is known as “Alternate Training Scheme”. This is shortly known as ATS. The course is designed by International Maritime Organization (an apex organization to look after the interest of Marine Industry). IMO provided guidelines for the course through the model course 7.04 under STCW ’95 (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Regulations. This internationally accepted model is adopted by member countries of the world with suitable modifications to meet their own industrial requirements. In India, Director General of Shipping has adopted the ATS course as per the guidelines of IMO. D.G. Shipping is the certifying body of Government of India, which approved CSSM to conduct ATS course. At present, CSSM is the only approved and certified Institution to conduct ATS course in India. Due to continuous shortage of marine engineers at the global level, member countries of IMO have deliberated at length the need for a short-term course to fill the demand-supply gap of marine engineers. Hence, this new course is introduced in all the countries throughout the World. ATS is split into three phases as follows:

Phase-1 (First year): 12 months training (residential) at CSSM
Phase-2 (Second year): 9 months training on-board ship as Trainee Marine Engineer,
arranged by CSSM.
Phase-3 (Third year): 11 months training (residential) at CSSM
On completion of ATS at CSSM, the candidates will have to appear for the M.O.T. Class-IV Part “A” examination in the following papers, conducted by D.G.Shipping, Government of India:

Mathematics
Marine Heat Engines
Applied Mechanics
Marine Engineering Drawing
After passing the above examination, the candidates will be issued Certificate of Competency (CoC) by D.G.Shipping. Based on this certificate, they will be designated as Junior Engineer to sail in the ship. Given the level of expertise available at CSSM, passing the above examination will be smooth sailing affair for the cadets.

The most important aspect ATS is that the cadets are sent for this ship-based training in the second year for 9 months after successful completion of first year training at CSSM. During this on-board training, the cadets possess hands on experience on board. Therefore, they have ready market acceptance after completion of the course. Through ATS, one can swiftly become Chief Engineer in a short period of 8 to 10 years.
