Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2011 on 18th September, 2011

The Union Public Service Commission will hold the Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2011 on 18th September, 2011 at Agartala, Gangtok, Panaji (Goa), Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Patna, Aizwal, Imphal, Port Blair, Allahabad, Itanagar, Raipur, Bangalore, Jaipur, Ranchi, Bareilly, Jammu, Sambalpur, Bhopal, Jorhat, Shillong, Chandigarh, Kochi, Shimla, Chennai, Kohima, Srinagar, Cuttack, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Dehradun, Lucknow, Delhi, Madurai, Tirupati, Dharwad, Mumbai, Udaipur, Dispur, Nagpur and Vishakhapatnam.

The examination is for admission to the various courses listed below leading to a career in the Defence Services .

(i) 250 seats in the 133rd Course at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, commencing in July, 2012 which includes 32 vacancies reserved for NCC ‘C’ Certificate (Army Wing) holders

(ii) 40 seats including the 6 vacancies reserved for NCC 'C' Certificate holders (Naval Wing), in the Executive (General Service) course at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, for the course Commencing in July, 2012

(iii) 32 seats at the 192nd Pre-Flying Training Course commencing in July, 2012 at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad

(iv) 175 seats at Officers Training Academy, Chennai for the 96th SSC Course (for Men) commencing in October, 2012

(v) 25 seats at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai for the 10th SSC Women (Non- Technical) Course commencing in October, 2012.

The vacancies announced now are tentative and may be changed at any stage by Service H.Q.

A candidate is required to specify clearly in respective column of the Application Form the Services for which he/she wishes to be considered in the order of his/her preference.

A male candidate is advised to indicate as many preferences as he wishes to, subject to the various conditions specified in the detailed notification available at http://upsconline.nic.in/CDSII2011-E.pdf

Women candidates are eligible for OTA only. So they should give OTA as their first and only preference.

Applicants must be Indian Citizens. More details are there in the detailed Notification.

Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status:

(i) IMA-Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1988 and not later than 1st July, 1993 only are eligible.

(ii) Indian Naval Academy-Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1990 (2nd July, 1988 in case of NCC Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders) and not later than 1st July, 1993 only are eligible.

(iii) Air Force Academy-Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1989 and not later than 1st July, 1993 only are eligible.

(iv) Officers' Training Academy- (SSC Course for Men) : Male candidates (married or unmarried) born not earlier than 2nd July, 1987 and not later than 1st July, 1993 only are eligible.

(v) Officers Training Academy - (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): Unmarried Women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd July, 1987 and not later than 1st July, 1993.

Educational Qualifications:

(i) I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy-Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.

(ii) Indian Naval Academy: Degree in Engineering.

(iii) Air Force Academy: Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.

Candidates who are studying in the final year Degree course and have yet to pass the final year Degree examination can also apply but they will be required to submit proof of passing the Degree examination to reach the Army HQ/Rtg. CDSE Entry, West Block III, R.K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 in case of IMA/SSC first choice candidates and Naval HQ ‘DMPR’, (OI & R Section) Room No. 204, ‘C’ Wing, Sena Bhawan, New Delhi-110011 in case of Navy first choice candidates and PO3(A)/Air Headquarters, ‘J’ Block, Room No. 17, Opp. Vayu Bhawan, Motilal Nehru Marg, New Delhi-110011, in case of Air Force first choice candidates by the dates given herein, failing which their candidature will stand cancelled .

(i) For admission to IMA, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy- On or before 13th May, 2012.

(ii) For admission to Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai- On or before 1st August, 2012.


Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to Physical Standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2011 as per guidelines given in Appendix-V of the Notification.

Fee and Application: All female applicants and those belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes are not required to pay any fee.

Application is to be submitted online only, by using the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in.

Online Applications can be submitted up to 11.59 pm on 6th June, 2011.


Those applying Online (excepting Female/SC/ST candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a reduced fee of Rs. 100/- either by remitting the money in any Branch of SBI by cash or by using net banking facility of SBI or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

Offline application may be submitted only by those residing in specified remote areas as specified in Para 6 of the Notification (those residing in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Lahaul and Spiti District and Pangi Sub-Division of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands or Lakshadweep). They may apply using the Common Application Form (Form-E) which can be purchased from designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices (specified in Appendix-III of the Notice) throughout the country for Rs.30/-. Such applicants are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- through a single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp of the requisite denomination which may be obtained from the Post Office. This stamp has to be affixed firmly on the Application Form in the space provided therein. The stamp must be got cancelled from the issuing Post office with the date stamp of the Post Office in such a manner that the impression of the cancellation mark partially overflows on the Application Form itself but within the space provided on the Form. The impression of the cancellation mark should be clear and distinct to facilitate the identification of date and the Post Office of issue.

Offline Applications from candidates residing in Remote Areas only specified in Para 6 of this Notice must reach the ‘Controller of Examinations, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi-110069’ by Post/Speed Post only latest by 13th June, 2011. These applications will be accepted only by Post/Speed Post from the Post Offices located in the Specified Remote Areas.

The Competitive examination comprises of a written examination and Interview for Intelligence and Personality test for those candidates as may be called for interview at one of the Services Selection Centres.

The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks allotted to each subject will be as follows:

(a) For Admission to Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy, there will be three papers, English (2 Hours duration with 100 marks), General Knowledge (2 Hours, 100 marks) and Elementary Mathematics (2 Hours, 100 marks)

(b) For Admission to Officers’ Training Academy, there will be 2 papers, English (2 Hours, 100 marks) and General Knowledge (2 Hours, 100 marks).

The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. Marks will be deducted for wrong answers in the Objective Type Question Papers.

The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be expected of a Graduate of an Indian University. Syllabus of various subjects is given in the Notification.

In addition to the interview the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects. All these tests are intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his/her intellectual qualities but also his/her social traits and interests in current affairs. The maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be equal for each course. Accordingly, the maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be 300, 300, 300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively.
