IGNOU's course for drop-outs

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has always been a forerunner in addressing the educational needs of the marginalised, rural learners, disadvantaged and socio-economically weaker sections.

The university has been offering a number of programmes, among which a flexible bridge course, Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP), is designed to address the school drop-outs and those who have not completed 10+2 schooling as part of the non-formal stream.  In our country, overall drop-out rates at 10th and Plus Two levels are around 60 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively. The drop-outs do not get an opportunity to pursue higher education in the long run. Majority of the school dropouts end up in jobs in the unorganised sector and are not able to contribute to the human resource base of the emerging knowledge society.

Flexible

The six-month BPP programme of the IGNOU offers a flexible opportunity to continue higher education for the school drop-outs. Social Sciences, Commerce and Mathematics constitute the curriculum. The learner is expected to complete any two subjects to become eligible to pursue graduation/diploma in IGNOU.

The medium of instruction is both English and Tamil.

The admission to the January 2013 session is open now and the cost of Prospectus is Rs.100.
