MADURAI KAMARAJ UNIVERSITY
(University with Potential for
Excellence)
Department of Marine and Coastal
Studies
School of Energy ,
Environment & Natural Resources
P.G. Diploma in SCUBA Diving for Marine Biotechnology (Full
Time) 2012-2013
I. School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources
Madurai Kamaraj University started the
School on Energy, Environment and Natural Resources in the 6th Five
Year Plan, the first of its kind in India. This Interdisciplinary School
carries out research, teaching and extension activities in the socially
relevant and vital areas of harvesting natural resources leaving a clean and
healthy environment leading to sustained development with optimized mix of
Conventional and Non-Conventional Energy Sources. The School carries out
research in interdisciplinary areas such as Solar Energy, Bio-Energy,
Environment, Natural Resources, Marine Ecology, Pollution and Toxicology.
II. Department of Marine and Coastal Studies
A Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies
(CMCS) was instituted in 1998 for the establishment of a Marine Field Research
facility at Pudhumadam, a coastal village in Ramnad District. The Centre was upgraded to the Department of
Marine and Coastal Studies from October 2009. The Department has been
recognized by its work and has been supported by international organizations
such as IOC/UNESCO, UNDP, WHO, IFS, GCRMN and by national organizations such as
the MoES (DOD), MoEF, ISRO, ICMR, CSIR, Planning Commission and the UGC. The
GEF/UNDP has also identified and included this Department as a member
institution to carry out research activities in the Gulf of Mannar Marine
Biosphere Reserve to protect and conserve the coral reefs.
III. Research programmes
The department has been
monitoring, on continuous basis, the status of coral reefs and ornamental as
well as food fishes around the 21 islands in the Gulf of Mannar coast and reef
areas of Palk Bay regions. This includes the status of corals, coral bleaching,
coral diseases, algal growth, quantity of ornamental fishes etc. SCUBA diving,
snorkeling and skin diving techniques are used for underwater reef ecology
studies. The information gathered will help in the conservation and management
of coral reef ecosystem in the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve. In
addition to the ecological research, the department has been undertaking
research in the areas of coastal marine pollution monitoring and marine
toxicological research. These studies will assess the status of coastal marine
pollution along the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay coasts. The oceans provide new
opportunities for the discovery of marine-based medicines/drugs. Marine
organisms may play an increasingly important role in biotechnology and medicine
as a result of their biochemical components. Isolation and identification of
natural biological compounds such as repellents, toxins, antifoulants and
antibiotics from marine organisms are also being carried out in this
department.
IV. P.G. Diploma in SCUBA Diving for Marine
Biotechnology (Full Time)
P.G.
Diploma in SCUBA Diving for Marine Biotechnology is a research based programme
where students need to undergo course work in the first semester and course
work and project work in the second semester. This course holds much scope both
in research and teaching. The curriculum has been developed with emphasis to
study practical knowledge about the SCUBA Diving Techniques and its application
in exploration of organisms for biotechnological aspects.
Scuba diving can have a huge benefit in bringing local
people into contact with fragile underwater habitats especially coral reefs and
educate them as to how important it is to preserve the marine ecological
system. SCUBA TRAINED persons may even be inspired to join one of the many
volunteer projects worldwide that are working to preserve marine environments.
Marine bio-products have, to date, been derived from relatively shallow-water
organisms using routine methods, such as SCUBA diving. Evaluation of the
pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutritional, and chemical potential of products
derived from deep water organisms has been limited. Despite the trend towards
remotely operated systems, there is still a need for manned submersible
programs to study and sample biodiversity in the deeper regions of the oceans
for exploring potential drugs using biotechnology.
The major objectives of this course are (1)
to provide
SCUBA diving skills to students of Sub-Aqua Marine Ecology and Toxicogenomics course who gain snorkeling skills in their
P.G programme, for their further research career, (2) to provide an
understanding of analytical methods for characterisation of bacterial strains
and compounds derived from the marine environment, (3) to develop laboratory
and data analysis skills, (4) to enable the students to effectively utilize
scientific diving and other techniques for the purpose of studying and
monitoring the marine environment, (5) to train local people, with different
diving techniques appropriate to their tasks and environments.
There are plenty of
opportunities for scuba diving and biotechnology skills in marine research. The
significance of this course are (1) Commercial
diving is one of the most lucrative diving career paths. Divers get employed in
private industries or government, (2) the employers offer jobs like underwater
welding, underwater inspections, salvage, oil industry work like exploring or
drilling, and underwater testing, (3) Commercial divers are essentially
underwater construction workers, (4) marine researchers gain valuable fieldwork experience by taking part in
marine conservation surveys, and may also carry out independent marine research
projects in exploring valuable drugs from sea and (5) the courses will
bring in two disciplines together Viz.,
SCUBA Diving and Biotechnology. Therefore, research and teaching will have
interaction with researchers, academicians and technologists which will bring
wide scope of job opportunity for students and local people.
