PREAMBLE
The
world we live in would have been totally different without the fruits of
organic chemistry.
The
various forms of vitamins, cloth, medicines, dyes, fibres, petrochemicals,
perfumes, preservatives, flavourings, paper etc. are some of the exciting
contributions of it. The organic compounds permeate our daily lives in a number
of ways. They play an essential role in such diverse fields as genetics,
materials science, nutrition, and consumer products’ development.
Many
scientists and chemists have contributed heavily to this branch of chemistry.
Their accomplishments are appreciated world wide and ideas carried forward.
They encourage us to think and act based on organic chemistry to make the
future of our planet bright. The people in organic chemistry take cognizance of
the responsibilities they have in the changing world by introducing novel
concepts, practices and amazing products.
Since
the changes in the field of organic chemistry are swift, periodic updating in
it seems to be obviously crucial. This is particularly applicable for those who
teach organic chemistry in the graduate and post-graduate levels because they
are the first people who introduce the charm of organic chemistry into young
minds.
In
view of the above, the Department of Chemistry at NIT Calicut, Kerala organizes
a faculty development programme entitled “Novel Strategies in Organic
Chemistry” during 3rd-7th December 2012.
This
programme is being sponsored by the UK- India Education and Research Initiative
( UKIERI). The UKIERI was started in April 2006 with the aim of enhancing
educational links between India and the UK. In the last five years, UKIERI has
played a pivotal role in establishing a step change in the educational
relations between the two countries. NIT Calicut and Leeds University, UK are
academic partners through a UKIERI programme.
