PhD Admission Notice 2014

Applications have been invited for admission to the IISER Kolkata PhD Program for the Autumn Semester 2014 in the following branches.
Biological Sciences
Chemical Sciences
Earth Sciences
Mathematics and Statistics
Physical Sciences

Eligibility
I. Department of Biological Sciences (DBS):
Applications are invited from motivated candidates having MSc / MS / MTech degree (with minimum 55% marks) in:
Any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of cellular & molecular biology, developmental biology, structural biology, plant molecular biology, behavioral biology and ecology, marine biology, neurobiology, biodiversity, microbiology, biophysics, bioinformatics, biotechnology and theoretical biology.
OR
Chemistry / physics / statistics / mathematics / computer application / computer science /  engineering

II. Department of Chemical Sciences (DCS):
Applications are invited for regular PhD programme for the Autumn semester, 2014 in the discipline of inorganic, organic, physical and theoretical chemistry.
Eligibility Criteria: Bright and motivated candidates who have passed MSc examination with minimum 55% marks.
Desirable Criteria: CSIR-UGC, NET-JRF, INSPIRE fellowship or any other equivalent fellowship.

III. Department of Earth Sciences (DES):
1) Eligibility for externally funded students:
Only candidates who have their scholarship through CSIR NET JRF / UGC-NET JRF/ DST-INSPIRE would be eligible to apply.
Candidates must have physics, chemistry and mathematics at 10+2 level, and at least one of these subjects at their bachelor level.
Candidates should have a minimum of 55% marks in the master’s degree.
They can work with any faculty member in DES based on mutual research interest.

2) Eligibility for DST / MoES funded Project students:
Candidates should have qualified in one of the following examinations, GATE, SLET, NET-LS
Candidates must have either physics, chemistry, or mathematics at their bachelor level, with all three subjects at 10+2 level, and a minimum of 55% marks in the in the masters degree.

3) Eligibility for institute funded students:
The institute will fund students interested to work in the following research areas:
Candidates must have qualified in one of the following examinations, GATE, SLET, NET-LS
Candidates must have either physics, chemistry, or mathematics at their bachelor level, with all three subjects at 10+2 level, and a minimum of 55% marks in the in the masters degree.

IV. Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS):
Applications are invited from motivated candidates who completed MSc / MS / MTech (with a minimum of 55% marks) in any field of Mathematics and are willing to pursue research in the broad field of operator theory. Candidates having their own PhD fellowship (UGC/CSIR-NET JRF, NBHM, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, INSPIRE or any other equivalent fellowship) are encouraged to apply.

In addition to the above, the following faculty member is seeking applications for PhD positions from candidates who fulfill the specific eligibility criteria mentioned below:
a) Essential qualification: Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in any field of Applied Mathematics / Statistics, Physics, Bio-Physics, Computer Science and Engineering;
b) Desirable qualification: GATE and previous research experience in Neuroscience. Candidates should have a strong theoretical background and would be expected to run EEG experiments and perform rigorous data analysis.

V. Department of Physical Sciences (DPS)
Applications are invited from motivated candidates having Masters degree in any field of Physical Sciences for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme at the Department of Physical Sciences (DPS). Final year post-graduate students who are yet to obtain their degree may also apply; however, they must complete the MSc / MS degree at the time of admission with the requisite 55% aggregate marks in the master degree.

The applicants should open the link (http://apply.iiserkol.ac.in/application)  and properly fill the application form as instructed. The form can be opened and edited / corrected until the last date.

Applicants should save the properly filled application form and take the printout after you finish and bring the signed copy at the time of interview if you are shortlisted. List of shortlisted candidates (based on merit, subject specialization and required research area) for interview will be published in the IISER-Kolkata website by 14th April, 2014.
