Admission to M.A. in Development Studies programme, to start from July 2012
Eligibility (Regular/Sponsored Candidates) Financial Support Application Procedure
Applications are invited for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in Development Studies, starting in July 2012, as per details of information indicated below.
Categories of Students for M.A. Programme in Development Studies
The Institute admits MA students under the following categories:
I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
The students will work full-time for their M.A. degree.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organization, NGO, development agency or industry for doing MA in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
MA Programme.

Eligibility for Regular M.A. Candidates
A Bachelor’s (10+2+3) degree (Major/Honours) or equivalent from a recognized University, in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale (45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD candidates) in major/honours only
OR
Candidates not having Major/Honours courses, must have the concerned degree with a minimum 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for General/OBC category candidates and a minimum 45% aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD category candidates.
Eligibility for Sponsored (Full-Time) M.A. Candidates
Same as for `Regular’ candidates, but also fulfilling additional conditions specified for Sponsored (Full-Time) candidates, as indicated under “Categories of Students for MA Programme”.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 17-07-2012. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-08-2012. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and all other conditions as mentioned under eligibility criteria for admission in to the programme. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories: As per Govt. of India rules. OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below.
Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
1. Institute Merit Scholarship is provided in the 2nd year to the student who secures highest Yearly Performance Index (YPI) during 1st year of the programme, subject to the condition that the concerned student clears all the courses in first available chance.
2. Merit-cum-Means Scholarships are available to a maximum of 25% students belonging to General/OBC categories, based on criteria of merit as well as means (as to be decided by the Institute from time to time).
3. All SC/ST students are eligible for SC/ST scholarships as per Institute rule.

First Step
Please get a print-out of the `Guidelines for Filling-up Online Application Form’, by visiting the concerned website given below.
Second Step
Please keep ready with you:
(i) a copy of your recent coloured photograph of size 4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm. (If possible, you may like to keep scanned copy of one such photograph, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Otherwise you can also fix the photograph manually on the print-out of the Online Application Form later. Please also go through the instruction indicated against Fifth Step, Point (c) below);
(ii) attested copy of your Date of Birth Certificate (if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);
(iii) if applicable, attested copy of your caste Certificate (Please note that OBC (Non-creamy Layer Certificate will have to be as per format prescribed below);
(iv) if applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate;
(v) if applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [ i.e. Sponsored (Full-Time)] - as per format prescribed below;

(viii) Please note that DEMAND DRAFT will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test.
As such, if a candidate is shortlisted and called* to appear in Written Test, he/she should immediately arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.

Selection
Applicants satisfying the eligibility requirement will be assessed for selection through a written test. The written test aims at assessment of knowledge about contemporary issues in the field and sensitivity to social issues, expressed through written analysis in English.

Categories of MTech/MDes Students
The Institute admits MTech/MDes students under the following categories:
i) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full-time for their MTech/MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech/MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MTech Programme
Minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or First Class in the qualifying degree, fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines, as indicated below:
Note: (a) All regular category candidates (except those having BTech degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section “Financial Support” below.
(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, and Part-Time categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.
Computer Science & Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or MSc (Computer Science/Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and a valid GATE score in CS.
Electronics & Communication Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering or Equivalent or MSc(Electronics) and a valid GATE score in EC/EE
Mechanical Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a) `ME’ for the specializations of (i) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, and (ii) Machine Design; and
(b) `ME’ or `PI’ for the specialization of “Computer Assisted Manufacturing” only; and
(c) `ME’ or ` Aerospace Eng.’ for the specialization of “Computational Mechanics” only.
Civil Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a) `CE’ for the specializations of (i) Structural Engineering, (ii) Geotechnical Engineering, (iii) Environmental Engineering, (iv) Transportation Systems Engineering;
(b) `CE’ or `AR’ for the specialization of “Infrastructure Engineering and Management”; and
(c) `CE’ or `AG’ for the specialization of “Water Resources Engineering and Management” only.
Chemical Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area (having Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, and Process Control, as subjects in undergraduate programme) and a valid GATE score in Chemical Engineering.
Biotechnology
Master’s degree in Science or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later, along with a valid GATE score in related disciplines.
Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MDes Programme
Minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% of marks in the qualifying degree/diploma as indicated below:
Note: (a) All regular category candidates (except those having BTech/BDes degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of all India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). Assistantships are provided to regular students (Indian nationals) at the rate of Rs.8,000/- per month, with valid and qualifying GATE score above the prescribed cut off level for MTech programme; and valid CEED score for MDes programme . GATE/CEED score requirement is exempted for students with Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0.
2. Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned
funding organizations.
3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or from any other funding agencies, are required to
perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.
4. The continuation of the assistantship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and
satisfactory progress of the student in the MTech/MDes Programme.
5. Financial assistantship will be for a maximum period of 2(two) years.

Categories of PhD Students
The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
i) REGULAR
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) SELF-FINANCED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document(s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
PhD Programme.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme
Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:

(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.
PhD in Engineering
For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant
area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5
or 70% of marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70%
marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.
v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of
Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level.
vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0
at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning
of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
vii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Design
For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree in Design or Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iv) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.
vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year
professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
viii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Science
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of
marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area
with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60%
marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.
PhD in Centres
i) Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or
70% of marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
v) Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also
considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment.
MININMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED, SELF-FINANCED, PART-TIME AND EXTERNAL CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS FOR PHD PROGRAMME
1. Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring
organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
2. Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 17-07-2012. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-08-2012. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score/NET or INSPIRE certificate (as may be applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants.
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories: As per Govt. of India rules. OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below.

1. Institute assistantships will be available to eligible PhD students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI) norms, as applicable from time to time. The present rates of assistantships are as below:

3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or fellowships from any other funding agencies, are required to
perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.
4. The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and
satisfactory progress of the student in the PhD Programme.
For appearing in the PhD interview under regular category of candidates, to-and-fro sleeper class railway fare or equivalent will be paid by the shortest route from the communication address to the Institute.

(ii) attested copy of your Date of Birth Certificate (if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);

Admission to Regular (Full-time) Dual (MTech+PhD) Degree Programme of the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, to start from July 2012
Applications are invited for admission to the Regular (Full-time) Dual (MTech+PhD) programme of the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, starting in July 2012.
About the Programme
The salient features of the Dual (M Tech + Ph D) Degree programme of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, are as follows:
Students shall be admitted only under `regular’ category. A `regular’ category student will have to work full-time for his/her Dual (MTech+PhD) degree programme. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or any other recognized funding agency, as per prevailing norms.
Eligibility: B.E/B.Tech in any discipline other than CSE or IT or equivalent, with any one of the following criteria (Please note that this programme is not meant for engineering graduates in computer or information technology related disciplines) :
a. a CPI of 7.5 or marks of 70% and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying B E/B Tech degree is not from an IIT
b. a CPI of 8.0 only, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT
c. a CPI of 7.0 (or more) but less than 8.0, and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT
3. Assistantship: Details are provided under the section “Financial Support” indicated below.
4. Course Works: Students admitted under the present programme shall, in the very beginning, be required to do course works of the duration of 3(three) semesters.
5. Comprehensive Examination: After successful completion of his/her course works, the student concerned will also have to pass the Comprehensive Examination in maximum two attempts - but before his/her completion of the second year in the programme,.
6. Within 6 months of successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination, the student concerned will have to present a State-of-the-Art Seminar (SOAS). The presentation will be open to all. In this, the student will present a literature survey of broad areas of his/her proposed area of research.
7. Thereafter, the student concerned will have to keep on fulfilling progress review requirements relating to his/her research as per Institute rules.
8. Duration of the programme: Minimum 3 years, and maximum 7 years from the date of admission.
9. Award of the degree: After successful completion of the Viva Voce relating to his/her thesis works, the student concerned will be awarded the M Tech and Ph D degrees together. The M Tech degree will be retroactive from the date of the completion of his/her Comprehensive Examination.
10. Non-satisfactory performance: At any time after successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination and SOAS by the student concerned, should the Doctoral Committee feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory, it may recommend termination of the student from the programme. In that case, the student concerned will receive just the M Tech degree and leave the programme assuming yearly progress report as M Tech thesis work; and the M Tech degree will be effective from the date of leaving the programme.

Admission to M.A. in Development Studies programme, to start from July 2012
Eligibility (Regular/Sponsored Candidates) Financial Support Application Procedure
Applications are invited for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in Development Studies, starting in July 2012, as per details of information indicated below.
Categories of Students for M.A. Programme in Development Studies
The Institute admits MA students under the following categories:
I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
The students will work full-time for their M.A. degree.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organization, NGO, development agency or industry for doing MA in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
MA Programme.

Eligibility for Regular M.A. Candidates
A Bachelor’s (10+2+3) degree (Major/Honours) or equivalent from a recognized University, in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale (45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD candidates) in major/honours only
OR
Candidates not having Major/Honours courses, must have the concerned degree with a minimum 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for General/OBC category candidates and a minimum 45% aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD category candidates.
Eligibility for Sponsored (Full-Time) M.A. Candidates
Same as for `Regular’ candidates, but also fulfilling additional conditions specified for Sponsored (Full-Time) candidates, as indicated under “Categories of Students for MA Programme”.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 17-07-2012. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-08-2012. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and all other conditions as mentioned under eligibility criteria for admission in to the programme. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories: As per Govt. of India rules. OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below.
Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
1. Institute Merit Scholarship is provided in the 2nd year to the student who secures highest Yearly Performance Index (YPI) during 1st year of the programme, subject to the condition that the concerned student clears all the courses in first available chance.
2. Merit-cum-Means Scholarships are available to a maximum of 25% students belonging to General/OBC categories, based on criteria of merit as well as means (as to be decided by the Institute from time to time).
3. All SC/ST students are eligible for SC/ST scholarships as per Institute rule.

Categories of MTech/MDes Students
The Institute admits MTech/MDes students under the following categories:

These are students who work full-time for their MTech/MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech/MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.

Minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or First Class in the qualifying degree, fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines, as indicated below:

Biotechnology
Master’s degree in Science or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later, along with a valid GATE score in related disciplines.

2. Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned
funding organizations.
3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or from any other funding agencies, are required to
perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.
4. The continuation of the assistantship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and
satisfactory progress of the student in the MTech/MDes Programme.
5. Financial assistantship will be for a maximum period of 2(two) years.

Categories of PhD Students
The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
i) REGULAR
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) SELF-FINANCED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document(s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
PhD Programme.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme
Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:

(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.
PhD in Engineering
For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant
area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5
or 70% of marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70%
marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.
v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of
Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level.
vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0
at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning
of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
vii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Design
For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree in Design or Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iv) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.
vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year
professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
viii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Science
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of
marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area
with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60%
marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.
PhD in Centres
i) Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or
70% of marks.
iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
v) Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also
considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment.
MININMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED, SELF-FINANCED, PART-TIME AND EXTERNAL CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS FOR PHD PROGRAMME
1. Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring
organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
2. Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 17-07-2012. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-08-2012. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score/NET or INSPIRE certificate (as may be applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants.
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories: As per Govt. of India rules. OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below.

4. The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and
satisfactory progress of the student in the PhD Programme.
For appearing in the PhD interview under regular category of candidates, to-and-fro sleeper class railway fare or equivalent will be paid by the shortest route from the communication address to the Institute.

Admission to Regular (Full-time) Dual (MTech+PhD) Degree Programme of the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, to start from July 2012
Applications are invited for admission to the Regular (Full-time) Dual (MTech+PhD) programme of the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, starting in July 2012.
About the Programme
The salient features of the Dual (M Tech + Ph D) Degree programme of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, are as follows:
Students shall be admitted only under `regular’ category. A `regular’ category student will have to work full-time for his/her Dual (MTech+PhD) degree programme. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or any other recognized funding agency, as per prevailing norms.
Eligibility: B.E/B.Tech in any discipline other than CSE or IT or equivalent, with any one of the following criteria (Please note that this programme is not meant for engineering graduates in computer or information technology related disciplines) :
a. a CPI of 7.5 or marks of 70% and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying B E/B Tech degree is not from an IIT
b. a CPI of 8.0 only, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT
c. a CPI of 7.0 (or more) but less than 8.0, and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT
3. Assistantship: Details are provided under the section “Financial Support” indicated below.
4. Course Works: Students admitted under the present programme shall, in the very beginning, be required to do course works of the duration of 3(three) semesters.
5. Comprehensive Examination: After successful completion of his/her course works, the student concerned will also have to pass the Comprehensive Examination in maximum two attempts - but before his/her completion of the second year in the programme,.
6. Within 6 months of successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination, the student concerned will have to present a State-of-the-Art Seminar (SOAS). The presentation will be open to all. In this, the student will present a literature survey of broad areas of his/her proposed area of research.
7. Thereafter, the student concerned will have to keep on fulfilling progress review requirements relating to his/her research as per Institute rules.
8. Duration of the programme: Minimum 3 years, and maximum 7 years from the date of admission.
9. Award of the degree: After successful completion of the Viva Voce relating to his/her thesis works, the student concerned will be awarded the M Tech and Ph D degrees together. The M Tech degree will be retroactive from the date of the completion of his/her Comprehensive Examination.
10. Non-satisfactory performance: At any time after successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination and SOAS by the student concerned, should the Doctoral Committee feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory, it may recommend termination of the student from the programme. In that case, the student concerned will receive just the M Tech degree and leave the programme assuming yearly progress report as M Tech thesis work; and the M Tech degree will be effective from the date of leaving the programme.

(iii) if applicable, attested copy of your caste Certificate (Please note that OBC (Non-creamy Layer Certificate will have to be as per format prescribed below);
(iv) if applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate;
(v) attested copies of Pass Certificates and Mark Sheets (Mark Sheets should be complete for all semesters/years) of your educational qualifications (from Class X onwards);
(vi) if applicable, attested copy of Certificates relating to your professional experience etc..
(vii) Please note that DEMAND DRAFT will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test and/or Interview.
As such, if a candidate is shortlisted and called* to appear in Written Test and/or Interview, he/she should immediately arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.
Such a candidate, on the day of the Written Test and/or Interview, will have to submit the original Demand Draft, along with other documents listed above, in the department in which he/she is applying for admission i.e. Department of Computer Science & Engineering.

Third Step
Please:
(i) enter in to the zone of Online Application Form by visiting the concerned website given below; and
(ii) fill-up the Online Application Form (by taking help of the Guidelines);
Fourth Step
Please:
(a) take a print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and
(b) also keep a copy of your Filled-up Online Application Form saved in your computer or a
CD (if the computer does not belong to you) for your future reference.
Fifth Step
After getting the print-out of your Online Application Form, you may:
(a) affix your passport-size photograph at the assigned portion of the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form;
(b) put your signature with date on the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and
(c) enclose attested copies of all relevant documents (as suggested under `Second Step’ above), with the print-out of your signed and filled-up Online Application Form@;
Note: @ Please note that, only and only if you are called to appear in the Written Test and/or Interview, you will be required to submit (i) all these documents (including your signed and filled-up Online Application Form), PLUS (ii) the required Demand Draft in original [as explained at point (vii) under `Second Step’], in the department in which you are applying for admission i.e. Department of Computer Science & Engineering.

Selection
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and/or interview/portfolio review, if required, based on performance in GATE, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Legal Jurisdiction
The Courts at Guwahati alone shall have the jurisdiction to settle and decide all matters and disputes related to the above referred admission process, as IIT Guwahati is the organizing Institute.
